Managing your files

The program known as either Windows Explorer or My Computer is designed to help you manage your files in much the same way you would organize your paperwork in a filing cabinet.  To start this program, click Start and choose My Computer.  At the left-hand side of your screen, you will either see a panel listing tasks and places, or a folder list.  To switch between these views, click the Folders button.  It’s often a good idea to store the files you create in the My Documents folder.  To look in this folder, click My Documents on the left side of your screen.

Working with folders

For a little extra organization, you can create sub-folders in the My Documents folder.  To do this, go to the File menu, choose New and then Folder.  You can type in a name for your folder and press [Enter] on the keyboard to complete the process.  To perform other tasks on your folders – for example, to rename or delete – right-click on the folder and choose the required option from the menu.

Working with files

  • Single-click on a file to display information in the panel on the left.
  • Double-click on a file to open it.
  • To rename or delete a file (amongst other tasks), right-click on it and choose from the menu.
  • To show the files arranged in groups, go to the View menu, choose ‘Arrange Icons by’, and then choose ‘Show in Groups’.  To select whether the files are grouped by type, size or so on, go to the View menu again, choose ‘Arrange Icons by’, then choose Type or Size.
  • To put a file on a CD (if you have a CD writer) or floppy disk, first ensure that there is a disk in the appropriate drive.  Then right-click on the file, choose Send To and then either Floppy of CD-RW Drive.
